Origins of the Pattern

The six‑color desert camouflage pattern—nicknamed “Chocolate Chip”—was developed by the United States in the late 1970s for use in rocky, arid environments. Its design combined large tan and brown shapes with small black‑and‑white “chip” clusters, intended to mimic the shadows and mineral textures found in desert terrain.

The pattern saw widespread use during the Gulf War (1990–1991) and became one of the most recognizable desert camouflages of the era. Although later replaced by three‑color desert and digital patterns, the six‑color design remains iconic for its distinctive look and historical significance.
