Origins of the Pattern

M‑81 Woodland camouflage was introduced by the United States Armed Forces in 1981 as part of the Battle Dress Uniform (BDU) system. Designed for temperate forests, mixed woodland, and transitional environments, the pattern uses four‑color layered organic shapes to break up the human silhouette at multiple distances.

It became one of the most widely recognized camouflage patterns in the world, used extensively by the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and Air Force throughout the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s. It also saw adoption by allied nations, law‑enforcement units, and special operations forces globally. Even after being phased out of standard U.S. service, M‑81 Woodland remains iconic for its versatility, effectiveness, and instantly recognizable aesthetic.
